House Location History

Texas Delt house locations since our founding in 1904.

Delta Tau Delta was founded at Bethany College in 1859. Gamma Iota Chapter was established at The University of Texas on April 4, 1904. The following is a location history of the Delt Shelter, pieced together using items found in the UT archives of the Cactus yearbook. You can find the archives online here.

The Delt Shelter has been in several different locations since our establishment in 1904; however, it’s been at 2801 San Jacinto for more than 80 years. The original Shelter at 2801 San Jacinto was built in 1941 but was torn down in 1969 and replaced by what stands today

This is not a perfect history, but it is a starting point.

We’d like to fill the gaps and add to the history of the Shelter. If you have any information and photos, we’d like to hear from you! We’ll take any house-related information we can get.

We are especially interested in finding answers to the following questions:

• 1933-40: Delt Shelter is located at 1712 Rio Grande. Can any Delts tell us what it was like living in this Shelter? And why did we need to move?
• 1940: We moved from 1712 Rio Grande to 2801 San Jacinto. Why did we move across campus to 2801 San Jacinto? How many guys lived in the Shelter? What was the Shelter like?
• 1943-44: The Navy took over the Delt Shelter and we had to move out. Where did we go?
• 1968: Delts moved into temporary headquarters at 2400 Pearl while a new Shelter was being constructed at 2801 San Jacinto. Why did we need to build a new Shelter? When did the new Shelter open
• 1971: When did we move into the current Shelter at 2801 San Jacinto?
